about

“Chaotica” is the first song that is not narrated from the perspective of the main character, the knight. There is a sort of cinematic perspective shift to a limited third-person point of view depicting a scene in which a new character named Chaotica enters the story. This is also indicative of a shift in the overall trajectory of the album.

Chaotica himself is a personification of all of the evil and chaos in the world. Instrumentally, the track is designed to be really jarring; it’s by far the heaviest song we have ever written, and we reserved it specifically for this occasion.

The song begins with a narration of Chaotica’s descent into the world: “Black bleeding from the sky above” (allusion to Lucifer’s Biblical fall from heaven). His name is written on the earth “by the Withered Hand” in the “savage ink of this world’s blood,” meaning he has staked his claim on the earth through all of the destruction and death we see in the world around us.

At this point the song jumps to his perspective and gives the listener a glimpse into his mind. He is ravenous and ready to kill (“My hunger seeks more lives to claim,” also a reference to the Bible when it describes the Devil as a “ravenous lion” in 1 Peter). There is another Biblical allusion in the line “My strength rides in upon the wind,” drawing a parallel between Chaotica and Lucifer who was crowned Prince of the Air.

Having mustered his strength on the earth, he sets out to find and kill the knight before he can complete his quest. He wants to prevent the knight from learning the truth and finding fulfillment in his life.

“Black bleeding from the mourning skies, poured out on all the earth, hiding from my eyes.”
In the final lines of the song, Chaotica goes into the sea to intercept the knight and battle him.

lyrics

Black Bleeding from the skies above
Seeping into this parched earth
Savage ink of this world’s blood

My name is formed, marred across the land
“Chaotica” scrawled out by the Withered Hand

Feel the power of consuming fear
Dread clutched your heart as I draw near

A blackened tongue utters my name
My hunger seeks more lives to claim

My strength rides in upon the wind
An ancient evil was condemned
Now wandering freely once again
Lurking no longer I descend

Where I walk even the earth is wise enough to tremble

Forms of light curse my life
I’ll burn the world, swallow it alive

Feasting on all those in my way
Ripping out the heart of the day

Black Bleeding from the mourning skies
Poured out on all the earth
Hiding from my eyes
