about

Those of you who have been with us for a while will probably recognize this song from our old EP. We decided to revamp the song for the album because it actually fit the concept extremely well despite the fact that it was written a really long time ago (Joe wrote the majority of the lyrics to this one almost five years ago). When we showed Johnny the original version, he had some really cool structural ideas to help it integrate sonically into the record as well.

The song transitions the protagonist’s feelings of dejection and hopelessness into his new mentality of empowerment and progression. While there are traces of regret in the chorus and first verse, the dominant attitude (musically and lyrically) is one of self-improvement, resolution, and even pity towards the old love interest.

Overall, the song is about pushing past love lost and picking yourself back up. We all kind of agreed that a lot of bands spend too much time dwelling on love lost (sometimes that’s all an entire album is about) and it can become a major drag if it’s not dealt with proportionally. In the scope of human experience (which is what we were approximately trying to hit with this record) romantic love does not occupy 100% of your time, effort, and thought. That’s part of the reason that we decided to spend no more than 3 tracks’ time dwelling on the subject before moving on to other quintessential human experiences.

The last lines are a final, dismissive send-off to the love interest as he closes the book on that chapter of his life. The knight is back on his path to finding the Castle and he won’t look back at the past.

lyrics

I will not compete this way
I refuse to run your race.

She feeds off all of the anguish and wrath
Of those who could not escape from her grasp
I wish you could see, yourself as I do
All these obstructions are tangled round you

I will not compete this way
I refuse to run your race
turn and run, escape while you can
You're just a part of her master plan

You've heard the stories and still decided not to heed
She promised you she'd be everything that you need
She was an angel or at least that's what you believed
But when you turned your back you knew that you were deceived (x2)

I won't. Back down. I will. Hold my ground (x4)
(You were the world on my chest,
now that you’re gone I’ve got nothing left)

You've heard the stories and still decided not to heed
She promised you she'd be everything that you need
She was an angel or at least that's what you believed
But when you turned your back you knew you were deceived (x2)

You've heard the stories and still decided not to heed (you heard the stories x2)
She was an angel or at least that's what you believed (you heard the stories x2)

Light fires, light fires thanks to your goodbyes
Let's start new but start without you

I thought you might have been Better than this
But that ship has sailed and You will not be missed (x2)
