“The Moonless Night” addresses the feeling of loneliness or isolation that everyone experiences at some point in their lives. The placement of this song is crucial because the knight is experiencing his most severe inner turmoil after years on the road to his destination, and is beginning to feel defeat and self-doubt creep up on him and erode the worth of his prior successes. This song also changes up the point of view again to briefly narrate from an omniscient perspective for roughly the first half so that the listener feels isolated even from the main character.

The knight “roams the earth by night,” doggedly pressing on through depression and fatigue day after day in hopes of reaching the end of his journey. He “prays to catch a sight of the thing that escapes his mind; it hunts and haunts, escapes and eludes…it’s gone when he opens up his eyes,” meaning that he is constantly searching for companionship and love but cannot find them anywhere.

The loneliness he experiences escalates until he begins to question whether or not he can ever find the Castle he has been searching for. He reflects on how difficult the journey has been (“This past year has been the hardest time of my life and I would kill for a rock or a hard place”) and becomes discouraged, realizing that “the flame that lit my way, the moon, led me astray. Thing things my heart once had that led me down this path, a wilted fragment of my focus; a hidden thorn among the roses.” That is to say, he sees that the forces of love and community that used to fuel him have disappeared (while alluding to the Moon and the Rose from track 3) and he begins to see life for its thorns rather than the roses they protect.
